Empirical Beliefs & Hypothesis; Do they terminate in some beliefs that need no further justification, go on infinitely - on belief being justified by other that then need justification, or circle back upon itself in some way - constituting a sort of basic belief system in no more need of justification?
A central concept in science and the scientific method is that all evidence must be empirical, or empirically based, that is, dependent on evidence or consequences that are observable by the senses. Empirical data are data that are produced by experiment or observation. "Empirical" as an adjective or adverb is used in conjunction with both... more »

which group for NIR video capture discussion?
Hello, I am playing around with a bullet camera which grabs video in daylight and in darkness. In darkness it uses NIR LEDs to see the scene and captures B/W video. Can somebody suggest a newsgroup or forums where I can discuss various hacking aspects for this? Thanks.

The difference between the probable and the fuzzy
At this juncture it is important to point out the distinction between fuzzy systems and probability. Both operate over the same numeric range, and at first glance both have similar values: 0.0 representing False (or non-membership), and 1.0 representing True (or membership). However, there is a distinction to be made between the two statements:... more »

pwm need to increase frequency
I have built the PWM circuit located here, [link] The triangle osc. frequency is about 150 hz. I want to increase it to about 15 khz. When I changed the capacitor, C1 and resistor, R1 the waveform got very distrorted. The risetime of the waveforms was slow. Are there adjustments that can be made to make the circuit work at 15 khz?... more »

Reductionism & Systems Theory: While the path of any particular system may not be predictable, outcomes had a tendency to group...many quite different systems actually share the same kinds of processes and there could be a family resemblance...
...Science had been founded on the belief that the proper route to understanding a complex system, such as the movement of the heavens, the mixing of chemicals, or the emergence of life, was to break it down into a collection of parts linked by simple mathematical formulae. You wanted a list of bits and the rules that put them back... more »

Electrolytic and Tantalum Capacitor Life?
Capacitor specs seem a little confusing about expected lifetimes. It seems to depend on various factors of temperature, current, frequency, etc. Just as a general rule, how many continuous hours of operation would you expect from a electrolytic or tantalum capacitor assuming the charge/discharge cycle is fairly long at maybe 1 cycle per second?... more »
